Abstract. The initial stage (the period from 1917 to 1941) of designing general education institution buildings in the RSFSR is considered, during which requirements for the facilities, urban planning conditions for their placement on the territory and approaches to determining the need are formed. The school, as a developing object, during the specified period consistently includes new types of premises based on new functional and technological requirements. The development trends of functional components of objects are identified, including the specialization of education formed in the first years of Soviet power, as well as the relationship with additional education in various types of objects. These trends coincide with modern trends in terms of the profiling of education and the possibility of transferring individual elements of education to other objects, increasing the level of individualization of education and the types of objects being formed.
