Abstract. The active use of ceramic hollow bricks in our country has shown that despite its high thermotechnical properties and low coefficient of thermal conductivity, as well as the attractive appearance of buildings lined with such a material, a number of problems arise during its long-term operation. The article presents the results of laboratory and field studies of the humidity regime of external walls and a comparative analysis of the durability of the facing layer of walls made of hollow ceramic and full-bodied silicate bricks. On the basis of the data obtained, the reasons for destruction of the facing layer of hollow ceramic bricks are revealed. In addition, the advantages of full-bodied silicate bricks at long service life are given. The influence of the formed ice on the thermal conductivity of brickwork is determined and proposals are formulated to improve the durability and heat-protective qualities of the facing layers of the exterior walls of multi-storey and high-rise buildings.
Key words: exterior walls, hollow ceramic and silicate solid brick, cement-sand mortar, voids, ice, frost, humidity, durability.
