Abstract. The issues related to the automation of the residential building heating system design and the possibilities provided by the information modeling of individual elements of the heating system to predict the life cycle of the heating system are considered. The method for designing the heating system of a residential building is well known, however, to automate the design, a list of tasks that are needed to be solved when creating the project, is required. Such a list is available, it must be divided into smaller subtasks with due regard for the existing regulation documents, and to create a sequence of tasks performance. A concept of solution is to be set to each task, it is necessary to develop the methods for realization of calculations for each concrete part of subtasks or for detailed calculations of each element of the heating system. A short list of tasks with a description of the necessary actions is presented in the article. The scheme of the sequence of the project performance for the use in computer-aided design is presented. The database as initial information for design can be formed considering the list of normative documents in which there are parameters of a microclimate in premises of residential buildings, and temperature of the coldest five-day period for all main settlements of the Russian Federation. Computer-aided design of the heating system of the building with the release of the project in accordance with the requirements of standards according to modern concepts ends here and then begins the formal uncertainty about the heating system life for 15-20 or 40 years when it is possible that the life of this heating system will be over. To know everything about the future life of the heating system of the building it is necessary to create mathematical models of all elements of the heating system with due regard for changes in specific parameters over time.
