  • Suffosion Landslides and Their Danger to Civil Engineering

    A rare but very dangerous phenomenon of landslide formation caused by suffusion processes is considered. Three types of these suffusion landslides with different mechanisms of their formation are described as well as the corresponding examples are presented. The explanation for some facts of catastrophic development of suffosion landslides is proposed.

  • Stabilization of Clay Soils of a Foundation Base of a Building under Reconstruction Using Alkalization

    The experience in the use of a sodium hydroxide solution for stabilization of alluvial water-saturated loams of the bases of strip and pad foundations of the building under reconstruction in the city of Ufa is described. The methods offered makes it possible to improve the design resistance of loams from 0.25 up to 0.55 MPa and the modulus of deformation from 10 up to 52 MPa.

  • Features of Behavior of Soft Clay Soil Under Conditions of Unconsolidated- Undrained Triaxial Tests

    The article presents results of laboratory investigations of deformation and strength properties of soft clay soil samples with undisturbed structure taken from the test sites for construction of the underground structures in St. Petersburg. The behaviour of the samples with undisturbed and disturbed structures in the course of tests is significantly different. The undisturbed samples have considerably higher stiffness than the disturbed ones. At the same time their strength properties are not considerably different.

    The work of a lateral surface of bored piles is considered. Dependences of variation of bearing capacity of the pile on its geometrical parameters and soil conditions are revealed. The method of calculation of bearing capacity of the lateral surface of bored piles according to the static probing data is offered.

  • Risks of Construction of Hotel Complex for Sports Delegations with Rehabilitation Center in the City of Vladimir

    Geological and social-ecological risks and factors determining them are considered. It is shown, that for the territory of Vladimir the most significant risk factors are natural-anthropogenic landslides. The methodology of a predictive estimation of stability of landslide slopes and a complex of engineering protection against dangerous developments of landslips are offered.

  • The Use of Direct Current Electrical Survey for Mapping of Anthropogenic Talik at Hydro-Electric Power Station Dam Under Construction

    The article presents the results of the use of different variants of direct current electrical survey (electrical profiling, vertical electrical sounding and electric tomography) in the course of mapping of the anthropogenic talik at the HEPS dam under construction. The applicability of each of these methods for solution of the assigned task has been determined in the course of investigation. Successful completion of the works under the conditions of an inhomogeneous geoelectric section and disjoint topography became possible only with the use of electrical tomography.

  • Analysis of the Causes of Air Leaks from an Inflatable Structure

    The causes of air leakage from the inflatab le structure in the city of Magadan have been studied. As a result of the instrumental examination of ceiling, walls, floors, doorways and working apertures in the Ice Sports Centre the numerous spots through which the air could freely leave to the atmosphere have been detected. The actual amount of leakage exceeds standard values by 50%. The causes of the air leaks are building defects and poor technical decisions chosen for construction under the severe climatic conditions.

  • Simulation of Prestressing in Arch Soil-Filled Metal Corrugated Bridges

    A new approach to the construction of arch corrugated bridges is analyzed. The case of prestressing the metallic arch design of a bridge with the help of a tie in the abutment before filling it with soil is considered. Based on the example of comparative calculations obtained through the method of finite elements, the efficiency of the use of such prestressing is shown.

  • The Evolution of the Ensemble in Teatralnaya Square in Samara

    The work is devoted to the evolution of the historical and architectural ensemble in one of the main squares of the historical centre of Samara - V.I. Chapayev Square. Special attention is paid to the 1920-1930. - the epoch of constructivism and the Stalin`s style in architecture, while radically changing the appearance of the square: constructing new buildings and in the center is created monumental sculptural composition.

    Features of the approximation of stress-strain diagrams of samples from steels of ordinary, heightened and high strength beyond the yield point are considered. The nature of the diagrams depends on the strength of steel, rolled plate thickness and heat treatment conditions. It is proposed to determine the modules of strengthening beyond the yield point on the basis of certificate data of metallurgical enterprises.

  • Experimental Investigation of Strengthening Collector Tunnels Overhead Cover Slabs with Meshes Made of Carbon Fibers in Mineral-Based Matrix

    Results of the experimental investigation of collector tunnels overhead cover slabs strengthened with carbon-fiber meshes in the mineral-based matrix are considered. Strengthening is executed by means of external reinforcement, joining of strengthening elements to the existing structure with the help of special solutions on cement basis. Results of the tests of overhead cover elements and full size slabs strengthened with carbon meshes are presented.
    The tests show a high level of tunnel lining safety reinforced with a carbon mesh.

  • Automation of Selection of the Mineral Part of Sulfur Asphalt Concrete Mixes on the Basis of Computer Simulation

    Qualitative characteristics of building mixes in general and asphalt concretes in particular depend on the optimal concentration - granulometric ratio of all the components of the mineral part. A successful choice of the concentration-granulometric composition of the filler makes it possible to obtain the strength of the material significantly exceeding the one specified by the State Standard Specification when the same components are used.
    It is shown, that the use of the method of packing simulation makes it possible to select a granulometric composition of the mineral part of asphalt concrete with a higher accuracy rather than when using the limiting curves of the grain composition. In addition the results of the simulation can be used during the automation of preparation of the asphalt concrete mineral part.
